Tobacco Free Florida Week Takes Aim at Youth Vaping Epidemic
April 28, 2019

The Tobacco Free Partnership of Columbia County took to the streets during Tobacco Free Florida Week 2019 to educate on “E-Epidemic: Vaping and Youth.”

Tobacco Free Florida Week took place April 22-28 and the goal was simple, educate as many people as possible on the dangers of electronic cigarettes.

“As crazy as it seems, most people have no idea the real dangers of electronic cigarette use and that fact this is is exactly what we’re calling it, an epidemic,” commented Joey O’Hern, Columbia County Tobacco Prevention Specialist.

The facts are alarming to say the least, youth vaping has increased dramatically across the country and in Florida. In 2018 about 25% of Florida high school students reported currently using electronic vaping, a 58% increase compared to 2017.

The Tobacco Free Partnership visited various community partners and influencers and met one-on-one to educate on electronic vaping and provide resources. Partners visited included but not limited to: City of Lake City, Wolfson’s Children Clinic, Columbia County Resources, Lake City Chamber of Commerce, Suwannee Valley 4’C and more!
